Once both sites had their respective equipment lifted and assembled, the operations phase of the project began. If it began roughly around August 1, then this phase lasted nearly two months. In a way, this phase was much more difficult and intensive, especially for me. Since I was the prototype guru, every issue, problem, delay, or project blockage, settled squarely on me to address.

Once we were into the operations phase, a typical day's work would be time shifted into the night time hours, where we would work until something forced us to stop. The reason we worked at night was that our infrared beam could be distinguished easily during darkness with our infrared viewers and cameras.

A "normal" work day would start where we would all meet for "breakfast" at about noon in the hotel restaurant. It would have been decided earlier in the morning or last night, which team members were needed at which working site. After this meal we would drive to our assigned work sites and begin the daylight operations that needed doing. We would break for dinner to discuss the night's activities and to make sure everything that was needed for that night was where it was supposed to be. After dinner, we would again head back to the work camps and start the night's operational trials. We would generally work until 1am to as late as 3 am some nights before heading back to the hotel. One the way back, it was someone's chore to stop at an open store and buy enough Heineken for everyone to have during the day's postmortem session that would be held back at the hotel.

Bob's room at the hotel was actually a dual purpose room. It could be used as a conference room and a sleep room. We would meet in Bob's room for the postmortem sessions. Here we would consume the Heineken and discuss the day and what was needed for the next day. In these sessions we would watch TV and HBO was playing "Star Trek: Search for Spock", nonstop. Don became concerned for the team when he discovered that we could nearly recite the entire movie's dialog as it played. We later gave Don a copy of this movie so he could learn the lines too.
